Asus Zenfone 4 review

You can nab yourself a 4G phone like the EE Kestrel, or a cool and colourful Nokia Lumia handset, but they all still pale in comparison to the mighty Motorola Moto G, with its glorious 720p screen, quad-core power and full Android KitKat. But another contender for the value crown has just strode into town: the Asus Zenfone 4, a £99 Intel-powered phone that packs some serious specs to rival the Moto G.
So does the Zenfone 4 deliver, and is it the first Moto G beater?

Asus Zenfone 4 design: Four inches of fun

The Zenfone 4 is the first 4-inch smartphone we’ve fiddled with in a while, and a domain almost entirely ruled by Apple for now (until that 4.7-inch iPhone 6 emerges). Even the latest budgety handsets tend to be 4.3 to 4.5-inches now.

Asus unveils two smartphones

Asus is better known for its laptops and tablets such as the ground-breaking EeePC and Nexus 7, but in the last few years the Taiwanese company has been steadily releasing mobile phones at very enticing prices.
Its latest models, the Zenfone 4 (above) and Zenfone 5 (below) are set to launch in the UK very soon. Check out the video above to find out more.
Priced £99, the Zenfone 4 is Asus’s entry-level device. Available in black, white, yellow, red and blue, it includes a four-inch 800x480 screen with scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 3.
Inside there’s a 1.2GHz Intel Atom processor back by 1GB RAM. The 8GB internal memory can be expanded up to 64GB with a MicroSD card and there’s a five-megapixel camera, but no flash.
Available in black, red, gold and white, the next phone in Asus’s range is the Zenfone 5.

Priced £149 the most significant difference is the five-inch screen, which has a HD resolution of 1280x720, IPS technology (for improved off-angle viewing) and can be operated using gloves.
The camera is more advanced than the Zenfone 4, with an 8-megapixel sensor and flash.
Inside there’s a 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Atom processor with 1GB RAM and 8GB storage, expandable using a microSD card.
The built-in ‘Zentenna’ is a dual-antenna that Asus claims is three times more effective than conventional antenna, providing a reliable network connection and less dropped calls..
Asus has also released a version of the Zenfone 5 for £179, with 2GB RAM and 16GB storage.
Both phones run Google’s Android operating system, which means you can download apps from the Google Play Store.  Over the top is Asus’ own ‘ZenUI’ interface, which includes a clean layout ensuring it’s easy to use.  Swiping down accesses the new What’s Next tool which collates important information such as meetings, messages and missed calls into an accessible format.
We had some time with both phones and we were impressed. The Zenfone 4 offers a lot of features for the money, but we were more taken by the Zenfone 5. It’s a stunning handset with a gorgeous screen that looks far more expensive than the price suggests.
The ZenFone 4 and ZenFone 5 go on sale on September 1 from the Asus eShop, Argos, Currys/PC World, eBuyer, John Lewis and Very.

Flipkart offering 20000 Asus ZenFone handset units for sale

The Asus ZenFone series lineup has been a hot seller in India and Flipkart plans to add a total of 20000 units to its inventory today. What’s more, the ecommerce website is also running a promo as part of its extended Independence Day offer where it’s providing 10% cash back when customers use select credit and debit cards to purchase any smartphone from the said lineup.
While 20000 units of Asus ZenFones is quite a large inventory, Flipkart hasn’t confirmed the exact number of Asus ZenFone 4, 5 and 6 devices separately. Considering that the second and third models are out of stock, it’s safe to say that the majority of the new supply might comprise of the 5-inch and 6-inch phones.
